Summer.

Well maybe not quite yet (I get excited by the end of winter!) but warmer weather is finally here anyway. And while

eczema sufferers may get excited that the cold dry weather has left, warmer weather presents a whole new series of problems.

Not least of these, swimming. Now, I am not saying stay indoors and away from water as swimming in general is not the issue here. Swimming and more importantly sunshine should play a part in any eczema treatment plan, the main problem with swimming is the chlorine and the sunscreen. The terrible two for summer time eczema flare ups.

I will cover sunscreen in another blog post as that is a whole separate kettle of fish.

Chlorine is used in pools and spas for its disinfecting properties and is one of the stronger irritants out there. It is known to irritate healthy skin let alone eczema skin. This I am sure you are aware of if you are sufferer of eczema or you take your kids to swimming lessons. The indoor heated pools are almost always worse as well due to the combination of chlorine with the heat and humidity.

So, what to do about it. The trick is to keep the chlorine away from the skin as best as possible. Easier said than done?

Well, there has been a great new Australian product released recently that you may not have heard about called Jungle Brolly, it works as a natural barrier to stop nasties from getting at the skin. It is worth trying for you or the little one to see how it works for you, applied to affected areas before swimming. You can also apply your moisturiser before swimming as well. Other than that, make sure you rinse off straight after swimming with water and a good natural soap or wash and then apply moisturiser as soon as you can.

So the tips in short form:

- Moisturise before swimming;

- Try a natural barrier cream or product to repel chlorine;

- Rinse straight after swimming with water and a natural wash;

- Moisturise again.

You can enjoy swimming with eczema, like all eczema management though, it just takes a little planning and effort. So make sure next time you head to the pool, through in your good natural eczema treatment cream and natural body wash.

Let me know your swimming with eczema stories or tips.

Talk soon

You know what, my answer is always the same.

YES!!

I believe that what we shove in our mouths nowadays is almost completely responsible for the massive increase in eczema occurrence over the past few years, that and stress, but I will save that for another post. But I guess the 2 of these are strongly related. I think life has become too fast..

Mum and I discuss this very thing all the time. When she was growing up there was nowhere near the cases of eczema and rashes and allergies that we see now and this is what we put it down to.

Nobody eats real food anymore. Well almost nobody.

Everything is fast this, easy that, quick junk. A quick walk down the supermarket (and I blame the major supermarkets for this as much as anything) and you will see what I mean, aisle after aisle of packet crap all supposedly to make our lives easier. Rubbish! I actually saw a lady the other day buying packet mash potato, I mean come on. How hard is it really to mash potato?

Think about back 40 years, before supermarkets were everywhere. Food shopping was done (if it wasn’t grown) at fruit shop and a butcher. That is it. No aisle 9 sauce mixes and flavour bases. Real food, made from scratch. So what the heck happened?

We got busy. Or is it just lazy? Food companies and the big supermarket chains got smarter with their marketing and capitalised on this trend. They ram it home to us in the media ever single day. Busy? Save time and money with our packet this or that. And the home cook laps it up by the trolley full! Real food is no harder to make than packet junk and costs no more, in fact it is a whole lot less to eat this way. I can feed our whole house of 3 burly young men on around $180/week and they are tradesmen who eat more than you can imagine.

You see, this packet and processed food is full of preservatives, flavour enhancers, additives and things that cannot be pronounced without a science degree. Do you really think this stuff is not doing you some harm?

So what does this all have to do with eczema? Plenty. I reckon a lot of eczema can be brought well under control in 90 days by simply changing your diet. Don’t believe me? Well try it. For the next 90 days:

- Cut out packaged processed junk;

- Do 90% of your shopping from outside of a supermarket, ie. Butcher, Greengrocer and Fish Monger;

- Cut out wheat, gluten and dairy from your diet;

- Try cutting down on procesed sugars;

- Prepare meals from scratch.

And that is it. Now I know this sounds simple but as we say here all the time. Managing your eczema is all about doing simple things consistently. Just try it, what do you really have to lose? Oh, and let me know how it goes for you in the comments section below!

I can’t think of a worse place to have eczema, and this is was what the discussion was mostly about, where was worse. A lot of people thought face, as face tends to be the most prominent but I still reckon hands, as they are the worst place to try and heal as they are constantly being open and closed and they are in and out of everything, all day.

Eczema on the hands is embarrassing, itchy and just plain painful as you can see from below..

Not very nice, and if you suffer from it yourself, then you know exactly what I mean.

So, What Can You Do About Your Hand Eczema?

The first thing you need to do is remove the triggers, as anything you do to treat your hand eczema, in fact any eczema, will not work unless you can remove the underlying triggers. The triggers for hand eczema seem to follow the general triggers but also tend to be exaggerated as your hands are used more than any other part of the body and tend to end up in all the nasty stuff, so I thought I would put together a few tips to help manage the eczema on your hands.

Chemicals

This is a big one with hands as they are always into everything, dishes, laundry, washing the kids/dog/home. So you need to be really thorough here and really dig down for everything your hands touch. Dishes and laundry you can replace with more natural products such as the miracle wash laundry balls for your laundry and the eco store products for the kitchen and always make sure you use gloves, just look for latex free gloves or wear cotton one’s under your rubber gloves.

Make sure you also eliminate any chemicals from you and your kids washing routines, watch out for SLS’s and artificial fragrances, this also goes for those nice little liquid hand soaps you have around the house – get rid of them. There are plenty of replacements available at your local health food store (or stay tuned for ours in early 2010).

Cleaning around the home is another big one, that stuff is TOXIC! Get rid of the really powerful chemical cleaners and look for more natural alternatives, there are plenty out there and make sure you use gloves.

I know a lot of these sound common sense, but you would be amazed at how many people just don’t do them. As I must have said 1,000 times over the years, managing your eczema isn’t rocket science or “secret”, it is just doing simple things repeatedly.

Stress

This is a big one. Stress is one of the bigger triggers for eczema there is. It also tends to be a never ending circle as often we find, people are stressing about the way their hands look or the fact that nothing is working for them. I know it is hard, but stop it! If you persist at the right things, you will get them under control. So try to relax.

Diet

I have spoken at length about eczema diet throughout the site, there is plenty around about it like this book here. The simplest thing I can tell you though, is simplify. Remember how your mother used to cook for you, meat and 3 veg? Well, you don’t have to go back to that but you know what I mean. Stop using packet rubbish and start making real food. It isn’t that hard. A good everyday supplement will also help you get everything we lack in our diets nowadays.

Moisturise

This is probably the easiest thing you can do with your eczema. Moisturise, moisturise, moisturise and ten, do it some more. I can’t emphasise this enough. Don’t let your hands dry out. 4 – 6 times per day when they are bad is not excessive. You want to look for a good natural moisturiser, free of petroleum based products like paraffins, preferably one especially formulated for eczema. Things like lavender and chamomile will help calm the itch and then look for things like aloe vera, olive oil, vitamin A and E to help heal the skin from within.

You can read more about XMA, the natural way to treat the eczema on your hands here

Hope that helps.
